Clinique Laboratory was founded in 1968 by Evelyn Lauder (cosmetics executive) and dermatologist Norman Orentreich(dermatologist). It began with skin care but then expanded into body lotions and fragrance production. Estée Lauder Companies acquired the company owned by Lauder and her husband later, became one of three largest brands of Estée Lauder alongside Origins and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, along with M•A•C, and Prescriptives as part of group of brands called 'Estée Lauder Companies Professional Division'. Originally marketed towards women, they now sell unisex beauty products targeting different skin types and concerns like oiliness, acne, redness and sun damage.
Cliniques focus has been about providing effective, safe skincare and makeup, free of potential irritants including mineral oil, lanolin, artificial colors or fragrances, parabens, formaldehyde preservatives and animal testing. Also Clinique uses a universal shade tone for foundation which allows for a range of natural skin tones to find matches. Their most popular items include moisturizers and the bestselling mascara ‘High Impact Extreme Volume & Definition Mascara’ launched 30 years ago in 1987. Its Black Honey Almost Lipstick color, first introduced to counteract “washed out” nude lip looks, continues to sell well today.
