Founded in 1894, Nestle Purina PetCare Company manufactures some of the top selling brands of dog and cat food in America, which include Pro Plan, Beneful, Alpo, Friskies, Tidy Cats, and Purina ONE, among others.
Purina has over three dozen plants in the United States employing thousands across North America. In Europe, Purina operates eight factories in seven countries. Purina exports more than 90 million tons of pet care worldwide each year, making them a leading global player in pet food production.
While many people view their beloved companions as part of the family, Purina strives to elevate the relationship between mankind and animals through extensive research into animal behavior.
Nestlé Purina was founded when William H. Danforth partnered with Edward E. Robinson to launch Ralston-Purina Company with money earned selling millet purified with a process called “Purification.” Today, Purina still uses this proprietary method when processing grains such as rice, oats, barley, maize, rye, millets, wheat, buckwheat groats, or any combination of these ingredients.
Aside from traditional sources of protein like beef, lamb, and seafood, Purina incorporates alternative sources of nutrients derived from novel sources like egg albumen and animal plasma to ensure high quality nutritious food for dogs and cats alike. Even though dogs and cats share a common ancestory back to wildlife species, genetics of domestic mammals have been influenced over generations through natural selection.Recognizing this difference in digestion and metabolism, Purina developed specific products tailored towards feline dietary needs.
