Free-To-Play Sci-Fi Mmo Defiance Returns With New Dlc And Ongoing Events
The free-to-play MMO looter shooter Defiance has been resurrected by Fawkes Games, a publisher focused on preserving legacy online worlds. After being shut down in April 2021 by German company Gamigo, which had acquired the original developer Trion Worlds, Defiance returned to life on April 18, 2025. This relaunch is currently available only for PC, with the game being downloaded directly from the Fawkes Games website rather than through storefronts like Steam. The revived version is the original 2013 Defiance, which includes nearly all of the content updates it received during its initial run.
A key aspect of this return is that the game is entirely free to play. There are no subscription fees or mandatory purchases to access the core experience. Fawkes Games has positioned this as an effort to revive the game's entire online community. The publisher is monitoring the response to this PC relaunch to inform future plans, which could potentially include bringing back console versions or the 2018 reimagined version, Defiance 2050. However, as of now, Defiance 2050 remains offline.
For players interested in the sci-fi action, the game offers a hybrid MMO-shooter experience. Set on a shattered Earth overrun by alien invaders and in conflict with rival factions, players engage in large-scale battles, complete missions, and uncover secrets tied to EGO-powered warriors. The gameplay has been described as a massively multiplayer version of Borderlands, featuring looting, shooting, and driving. While playable solo or in a 4-player group, significant moments often involve large-scale public events in the overworld where dozens of players collaborate to defeat massive bosses or enemy swarms for high-tier loot.
Fawkes Games is actively supporting the relaunched game with new downloadable content (DLC) at no additional cost. In June 2025, the publisher released the Arkbreaker DLC, which is available for free. This DLC adds substantial new content, including new main story and side missions, three additional pursuits, over 50 new weapon variants, and a special item called the Ark Spike Battery. This item allows players to summon powerful Arkfalls, provided they have completed the DLC's main story missions.
Alongside the Arkbreaker DLC release, Fawkes Games launched a "Hot Summer" event that runs until July 30, 2025. This event introduces two more pursuits and four additional sieges for players to engage in, providing further free in-game activities and challenges.
The return of Defiance is described by Fawkes Games as a work-in-progress. The publisher is still in the process of resolving some technical issues that emerged after the relaunch. For U.S. consumers and gamers seeking a free-to-play online experience, Defiance presents an opportunity to enter a persistent sci-fi world with a wealth of content, regular free updates, and a community-focused revival effort. Interested players can download the game directly from the Fawkes Games portal and create an account to begin playing without any initial cost.
